Committee Activities


[Education Committee]

Educational symposia for medical oncologists are held twice a year in local cities in Japan. Moreover, educational seminars are held at JSCO annual meetings.

[Editorial Board]
The International Journal of Clinical Oncology (IJCO) has been published as the official journal of the JSCO since 1996. The International Cancer Conference Journal (ICCJ) has been published as the official journal of the JSCO since 2012. Both IJCO and ICCJ are now online-only journals. For more information, please see our Journal page.

[Supervisory Committee of Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines]
A clinical practice guidelines committee assesses clinical guidelines proposed by Japanese specialized organizations and provides clinical guidelines for 26 kinds of cancer on the JSCO website. All people involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer can easily access these guidelines. The number of accesses to these guidelines has been increasing.

[Public Relations Committee]
Public lectures for the dissemination of knowledge and education concerning the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer are held at least twice a year in local cities in Japan.

[Social Cooperation and Patient Advocacy Committee]
The JSCO promotes patient advocate leadership programs in its annual meetings.

[Clinical Research Committee]
A new foundation for promoting clinical trials was established this year.

[E-learning Subcommittee]
JSCO has established an internet education system for physicians and healthcare professionals.


 

List of Committees

Election Committee
Tasks
To manage and implement the election of board members, representatives and the Congress Presidents of the Annual Meetings. To summarize the tasks and issues so that fair elections can be held, and to share them in discussions in appropriate committees and board meetings.

 

Editorial Board
Tasks
To smoothly carry out the editing and publishing of journals in order to achieve further advances in clinical oncology and better health care of cancer patients, including the International Journal of Clinical Oncology (IJCO) and International Cancer Conference Journal (ICCJ).

 

Program Committee
Tasks
To plan and organize the programs of the annual academic meeting, with consideration of the future roles of the meeting, in cooperation with the Annual Meeting Steering Committee. In addition, to review the applied subjects and determine their adoption, and to assess the programs after the conferences and make plans concerning education of the members.

 

Clinical Research Committee
Tasks
To manage clinical trials in which the members of the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology are engaged with and support the conduct of clinical trials against cancer or malignant diseases appropriately and optimally. To aim to regularly provide information on clinical trials for the members. Moreover, to formulate guidelines for clinical trials and to deal with issues relevant to clinical guidelines and criteria for response evaluation and criteria for adverse events.
Health Insurance Committee
Tasks
To consider issues regarding the health insurance system concerning clinical oncology with the cooperation of a society member and cancer patient group. Based on this, with consideration of the countermeasures against cancer in Japan, to draw up future plans and various actions (summarizing the short-, mid- and long-term challenges and drawing up a road map toward their achievement), and to make proposals to the government authorities concerned.

 

Articles of Association Committee
Tasks
To deliberate concerning the necessity, reasonableness, and consistency of the Articles of Association, Detailed Enforcement Regulations of the Articles of Association, and associated provisions, and when necessary, to consider their revision, the formulation of new articles, or their abolition, with the objective of management in accordance with the purposes of the JSCO. To set out the philosophy of the JSCO clearly in written form, and to make this known to the Society's members. To collate regulations and other provisions within the JSCO, and advise the Board of Directors, committees, and other structures responsible for the formulation of regulations so as to maintain their consistency with the Society's philosophy and Articles of Association as well as internal consistency among regulations.

 

Financial Committee
Tasks
To investigate the domestic asset management of societies and the future national and international economic climate. In light of the resulting findings, to consider the JSCO's asset management and the acquisition and disposal of assets, and report to the Board of Directors.
Future Planning Committee
Tasks
To investigate policies for cancer treatment in countries other than Japan as well as the activities of societies and organizations concerned with cancer treatment in Japan and overseas. In light of the resulting findings, to appraise the state of measures for dealing with cancer in Japan, consider the future shape of the JSCO and its various policies (categorizing issues as short-term or mid/long-term, and proposing practical, realistic future options and policies by formulating road maps for implementation), and to make proposals to the Board of Directors.

 

International Affairs Committee
Tasks
To investigate the policies concerning clinical oncology overseas and the activities of international societies and organizations in cooperation with the Future Planning Committee. To select appropriate societies and organizations as partners, and to facilitate and boost international exchanges. To evaluate concrete ways and road maps for exchanges and collaboration, and to hold discussions with the selected partners. In particular, to undertake activities that deepen exchanges with major international societies and organizations, such as the ASCO, ESMO and ECCO. In addition, to support clinical and/or translational oncology research in Asia.

 

Public Relations Committee
Tasks
To investigate the publicity activities undertaken by international and domestic societies and organizations concerning clinical oncology. Based on these investigations, to consider and implement public relations activities to familiarize the general public with the activities of the JSCO. To increase awareness about these activities, and to provide information about related conferences and seminars to the members. To carry out information activities for the general public, with the aim of achieving effective publicity in cooperation with related societies in Japan.
 Working Group on JSCO Website
 Tasks: To analyze and improve the performance of the JSCO website.

 

Ethics Committee
Tasks
Based on the request of members and the Board of Directors, to consider carefully the various issues in clinical research and clinics on oncology, from the perspective of bioethics and social ethics, and to submit a report. To organize the system to adequately comply with this report. To investigate compliance and consider the necessity of revision.
 Working Group on COI Policy
 Tasks: To examine and amend the Conflict of Interest Policy for Clinical Oncology Research in order to
 meet the social circumstances.
Supervisory Committee of Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines
Tasks
To formulate clinical practice guidelines for cancer treatment, and to ask other societies and organizations for cooperation in creating a database. To compile a database of clinical oncology by aggregating the standards of care established in related conferences of each field, and ensure the consistency of these standards. Moreover, to look for information in education seminars and to hold discussions with the information holders to compile a database.

 

Cancer Guidelines Evaluation Committee
Tasks
To evaluate the methodological quality of clinical practice guidelines for cancers and other related guidelines.

Tasks
To plan, publish, and revise cross-disciplinary guidelines which are difficult to draw up by a single specialized society.
 Working Group on Guidelines for Antiemetic Usage
 Tasks: To evaluate and revise the Guidelines for Antiemetic Usage.
 Evaluation Working Group on Guidelines for Antiemetic Usage
 Tasks: To undertake external evaluation of the Guidelines for Antiemetic Usage.
 Working Group on Guidelines for G-CSF Usage
 Tasks: To revise the Guidelines for G-CSF Usage.
 Working Group on Guidelines for Fertility Preservation of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients
 with Cancers

 Tasks: To publish the Guidelines for Fertility Preservation of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with
 Cancers.​
General Affairs Committee
Tasks
To undertake consultations with the Japan Medical Association, the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences and other related societies as well as with patient groups, and to provide the initial response to requests and inquiries. To address matters that other committees do not take control of, and respond to requests from the Board of Directors.

 

Education Committee
Tasks
To deliberate member education and to plan education symposia, seminars and other related educational programs in order to foster specialists in clinical oncology. To attempt to standardize and share appropriate terminology for use by institutions dealing with cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly with respect to terms translated into Japanese from other languages. In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, to respond to the revisions to the 11th edition of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) of the World Health Organization (WHO), including the production of a Japanese translation.

 

Academic Conference Steering Committee
Tasks
To acquire information about the schedules, programs, subjects, managing costs and finances of international and domestic academic conferences. Based on this information, to examine the roles of the academic conferences of the JSCO, by deliberating where to differentiate and share with the conferences of other societies. To make plans for how to fairly select administrative companies and gain approval by the Board of Directors. According to these plans, to select the companies and make appropriate reports to the members. In addition, to manage the steps of preparing and enforcing budgets and settling accounts in cooperation with the Financial Committee and president, and to distribute proper reports to the members.
Conflict of Interest Committee
Tasks
Based on the "Guidelines for Conflict of Interest in Clinical Research on Oncology", to request that the Chairman, board members and specific committees disclose any conflicts of interest. To conduct deliberations in case issues arise in conflict with the guidelines. To investigate compliance with the conflict of interest guidelines in cooperation with the Ethics Committee, and to deliberate on the necessity of revision.

 

JSCO Certified Data Manager / CRC System Committee
Tasks
To manage the data manager certification system. To hold Medical Staff Seminars for healthcare professionals, and to perform activities that improve the social awareness of the data managers with the Public Relations Committee.

 

Cancer Collaboration and Cancer Care Network Navigator Certification Committee
Tasks
To seek public opinions on cancer therapy, to summarize and analyze these opinions, and to create appropriate reports. To deliberate a better system for clinical oncology and an effective way to consolidate this system in Japan.

 Tasks: To examine the contents of the Cancer Care Network Navigator System and organize seminars
 and fieldwork.
 Working Group on Cancer Care Network Navigator Schooling
 Tasks: To plan seminars related to the Cancer Care Network Navigator System.
 Working Group on Evaluation of Cancer Care Network Navigator System
 Tasks: To verify the operation of the Cancer Care Network Navigator System.

 

Social Cooperation and Patient Advocacy Committee
Tasks
To carry out the PAL program at JSCO Annual Meetings. To consider multidirectionally how to provide further assistance for patients and their families.
 Working Group on PAL Program
 Tasks: To examine the contents of the PAL Program.
Copyright Committee
Tasks
To provide a platform for handling intellectual property rights, such as media coverage copyrights, with regard to the journals of our society, clinical practice guidelines for cancers, the project called “Cancer e-Learning” commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and annual meetings, etc., and to respond to all related requests, questions, and complaints. This is to be undertaken in conjunction with the General Affairs Committee, the IJCO Editorial Board, the Cancer Guidelines Committee, the Academic Conference Steering Committee, and so forth.

 

Liaison Committee of Cooperative Oncology Societies
Tasks
To correspond with other cancer-related societies in Japan in order to improve the scientific and social significance of JSCO as the cross-sectional society. At present, committee members consist of 37 cancer-related societies other than JSCO. To correspond with other Cancer Relations Societies in Japan in order to improve scientific and social significance of JSCO as the cross-sectional society. At present, committee members consist of 37 Cancer Relations Societies other than JSCO.

 

Interdisciplinary Classification Review Committee
Tasks
To review the cancer classifications with the aim of establishing a common standard.

 

Cancer Registry Database Committee
Tasks
To develop an integrated framework for effective cancer registration by implementing and using the National Clinical Database System.
