New Year's Greetings from the Chairman

I extend my heartfelt New Year greetings to all the members. As we welcome 2025, I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. As the Chairman of the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology (JSCO), I am filled with a renewed sense of determination as we embark on this New Year.

2025 is the year of乙巳 (Kinoto-Mi). ‘乙’(Kinoto) is the second of the ten Heavenly Stems and represents the element of wood, symbolizing the flexible growth and horizontal expansion of plants. ‘巳’ (Mi or snake) has been revered as a divine messenger and is considered a symbol of immortality due to its ability to shed its skin repeatedly. Therefore, the year of乙巳 (Kinoto-Mi) is seen as a time for ‘continuous regeneration and flexible development.’ In Greek mythology, the staff of Asclepius, the god of medicine and wisdom, is entwined with a snake, symbolizing the snake's regenerative abilities and wisdom. In the field of cancer treatment, we must also strive for further progress and innovation based on past research achievements.

In October of last year, we held the 62nd Annual Meeting of the JSCO under the theme ‘Knowing Cancer, Facing Cancer, Living the Future,’ with 6,300 participants. The event saw lively discussions that transcended the boundaries of specialized fields. This year, we will hold the 63rd Annual Meeting from October 16th (Thursday) to 18th (Saturday) at Pacifico Yokohama, under the theme ‘Living with Cancer, Living beyond Cancer.’ We look forward to your participation.

In 2025, it is crucial for all the JSCO members to unite in pursuing the best treatment methods for patients. We ask for your cooperation and support in incorporating new technologies and knowledge to develop more effective treatments. Additionally, we are committed to nurturing young researchers and fostering the next generation of leaders, which we believe is essential for the advancement of our Society.

Furthermore, the JSCO aims to be an open Society, strengthening collaboration among healthcare professionals and with domestic and international Societies to build a ‘Gan Chi’ that enhances each other.

Finally, let us embrace the wisdom and flexibility symbolized by乙巳 (Kinoto-Mi), and pledge to adapt and overcome challenges with ingenuity. I wish you all good health and success, and I sincerely hope that 2025 will be a wonderful year for everyone. Thank you for your continued support.
